Seven Steps to Freedom in Christ
One of the greatest promises of the Bible is that Jesus came to bring freedom. The Gospel isn’t just about being saved for eternity—it’s about living in freedom today. Jesus said:
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
(John 8:36, NIV)
The truth is, many Christians still struggle with things that keep them bound—whether it’s habits, fears, past wounds, or spiritual oppression. The good news is that Christ has given us both the authority and the tools to walk free.
Here are seven practical steps that can help you experience freedom in your life:
1.
Recognise the Battle
The Bible reminds us that our struggle isn’t primarily against people, but against spiritual forces of darkness (Ephesians 6:12). Being aware of the reality of spiritual warfare keeps us alert and prayerful.
2.
Confess and Repent
Freedom starts with honesty. The Apostle John says:
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”
(1 John 1:9, NIV)
Repentance closes the door to the enemy and opens the door to God’s grace.
3.
Forgive Others
Unforgiveness is one of the enemy’s favourite footholds. Jesus taught us plainly:
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”
(Matthew 6:14, NIV)
Forgiveness isn’t saying what someone did was right—it’s choosing to release them into God’s hands.
4.
Renounce the Enemy’s Hold
Sometimes we need to speak it out loud: “I renounce every agreement I have made with fear, with shame, with addiction…” This is about breaking ties with the lies and strongholds that have kept us trapped.
5.
Take Authority in Christ
Jesus has given His followers authority over the enemy:
“I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.”
(Luke 10:19, NIV)
We don’t fight in our own strength—we stand in Christ’s victory.
6.
Replace the Lies with God’s Truth
Every stronghold is built on a lie. The Word of God is the weapon that tears down those lies. Declare what God says about you: that you are forgiven, chosen, loved, and free.
7.
Fill Your Life with the Holy Spirit
Deliverance is not the end; it’s the beginning. Jesus warned that an empty house could be taken over again (Matthew 12:43–45). Fill your life with the Spirit through worship, prayer, scripture, and fellowship with other believers.
A Prayer for Freedom
Why not pray this where you are today?
“Lord Jesus Christ, I thank You that You died for my sins and rose again for my freedom. I confess and repent of every sin, and I forgive those who have sinned against me. In Your mighty name, I renounce every agreement I have made with the enemy. Right now, I take authority over every spirit of fear, shame, and bondage, and I command you to leave me in Jesus’ name. Holy Spirit, come and fill me afresh—fill every part of my life with Your presence, Your truth, and Your freedom. Amen.”
Freedom is not just a one-time event—it’s a daily walk with Jesus. Keep walking with Him, keep declaring His truth, and keep filling your life with the Spirit.
